Derbyshire County Council's Welfare Rights Service helps residents maximise their income, access the benefits they are entitled to, and receive expert advice and representation when they need it most. In 2025/26, the service supported more than 20,000 Derbyshire residents with benefit enquiries, providing information, advice, casework, and appeal representation.
An opportunity has arisen to join our Social Care Team as a part-time Team Manager, with a focus on the south of the county. You will work alongside the Team Manager leading on the north, jointly managing a countywide team and providing a consistent, coordinated approach to welfare rights support for social care clients.
The Social Care Team works closely with Adult and Children's Social Care, finance, and deputyship colleagues to support residents with a wide range of welfare benefits issues. Its work ranges from one-off advice to social care professionals through to complex casework and appeal representation. By helping residents secure their benefit entitlement, the team contributes to financial wellbeing and supports the wider work of social care services.
You will provide day-to-day line management, supervision, and professional support to allocated staff, setting clear priorities and helping colleagues develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence. Coaching, reflective practice, and a supportive team culture will be central to your approach, alongside clear expectations for the quality and timeliness of advice, casework, and representation.
Working closely with the other Social Care Team Manager, you will coordinate referrals, workload allocation, team meetings, and service delivery across the county. Your focus will be on the south, while contributing to shared planning, mutual support, and consistent standards across the whole team. Together, you will monitor demand, review service quality and performance information, and use learning from practice to identify and implement improvements.
Partnership working is an important part of this role. You will help develop and maintain effective relationships with social care, finance, and deputyship colleagues, strengthening referral pathways and ensuring welfare benefits advice is responsive to the needs of clients and referring professionals. Alongside the other Team Manager, you will contribute to a planned programme of briefings and training.
Reporting to the Service Manager, you will work with other Team Managers and the Business Services Manager to support operational leadership across the Welfare Rights Service. You will contribute to service planning and delivery of the Welfare Rights Service Plan, helping translate agreed priorities into practical improvements for staff, partners, and residents.
You will also maintain a small, complex caseload, continuing to apply and develop your welfare rights expertise through benefit advice, casework, and appeal representation. This balance of management and practice will help you provide informed technical guidance, support staff development, and contribute to quality assurance across the service.
We are looking for a confident and supportive manager with significant welfare benefits experience, specialist welfare benefits knowledge, and experience of managing and supervising a team. You will be able to organise and prioritise work, support staff performance and development, and maintain high standards within a quality framework. Strong analytical, communication, and partnership-working skills are important, together with an understanding of social care-related welfare benefits issues and the ability to explain complex information clearly.
This role would suit someone who enjoys developing others, combining professional expertise with effective management, and working collaboratively to improve services. It offers an opportunity to help shape a specialist team's practice and make a meaningful difference to the financial wellbeing of Derbyshire residents.
Please refer to the Job and Person Profile and supplementary information for full details of the role and the knowledge, skills, and experience required. In your application, please demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria, using relevant examples.
