Registered care home manager jobs: frequently asked questions
Welcome to our registered care home manager jobs page, featuring all the latest roles throughout the UK, as well as frequently asked questions below.
What does a registered care home manager do?
Registered care home managers (who may also be known as registered home managers) manage the day-to-day running of residential care homes.
They’re known as ‘registered’ managers because they’re registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in order to manage care homes.
As a registered home manager, you’ll be responsible for recruitment, managing staff, overseeing finances and ensuring the quality of care meets nationally recognised standards.
The homes you manage could support adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health conditions or older people.
What are the daily responsibilities of a registered care home manager?
As a registered home manager, your daily responsibilities can vary greatly depending on the type of residents you work with.
But broadly, they might include:
• Be legally responsible for the service to ensure it is run in accordance with the various laws pertaining to running care homes, notably CQC regulations
• Ensuring the delivery of high quality, personalised care
• Recruiting, training and managing staff
• Managing the budgets and financial responsibilities of the home to required targets
• Maintaining health and safety standards
• Working with other local community organisations
• Ensuring medication plans are adhered to
• Organising group activities
• Building a relationship with residents’ families
Your shift pattern can vary, but care management is a 24/7 responsibility.
So, working unsociable hours, and being on call when you’re not working, is possible.
What skills and qualifications do you need to become a registered care home manager?
First and foremost, to become a registered home manager you need to be registered with the CQC.
To register, you’ll need a mix of qualifications, experience and personality traits.
A level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care was a qualification created especially for care management – and will put you in the ideal position to register.
However, there are some alternative routes into this role.
If you’re an NMC registered nurse with some leadership experience or qualifications, you may be considered.
Also, with a Level 4 NVQ in Health and Social Care, and some solid leadership experience, you might be able to apply.
An undergraduate or master’s degree related to social care could also put you in a strong position.
Whatever qualifications and experience you have, your skills will be carefully assessed too.
You’ll need to be caring and compassionate of course, but resilient and patient too.
It’s a challenging career choice as well as a rewarding one.
You’ll also need leadership qualities, lots of confidence and superb people skills – which are all essential when training and managing staff.
How much do registered care home managers earn?
Registered home managers typically work in the private sector, so pay is unregulated and can vary.
Industry statistics suggest that the average annual salary can range from £25,000 to £30,000 per annum to £80,000.
It’s not uncommon for registered home managers to receive bonuses too, and pay can be much higher with enough experience.
The starting end of a Home Care Home Managers salary usually range between £22,000 to £35,000.
This is usually 30 - 60 unit assisted living facilities or smaller homes with between 5 - 35 beds.
Mid range salaries come in between £35,000 and £45,000 respectively.
This refers to midsize homes with between 30 - 50 beds.
Finally, high end salaries will often range between £46,000 to £75,000 basic salary, plus bonus.
This would be for larger services averaging 50 - 80 beds. It’s important to remember your legal requirements remain the same, regardless of the salary.
The care sector is currently drastically understaffed, so there is a push both for care workers and registered home managers.
It’s likely that many providers will be offering particularly good financial rewards in the coming years for the right people.
