Practice Development Lead Social Worker - Children In Care Team

Role Purpose

To champion professional development, reflective supervision, and evidence-informed practice across the Children In Care Team . You will play a vital role in mentoring practitioners, developing tools and frameworks, and enhancing the quality and consistency of interventions to improve outcomes for Looked After Children.

Key Responsibilities

Practice Leadership

Model and embed high-quality, trauma-informed, child-focused social work practice.

Provide expert consultation on complex cases and lead by example in decision-making.

Workforce Development

Design and facilitate CPD activities, reflective practice groups, and learning sessions.

Support newly qualified social workers, students, and less experienced staff through supervision and coaching.

Quality Assurance & Audit

Lead audit activities, practice evaluations, and service reviews.

Use performance data and feedback to inform improvement strategies.

Policy & Practice Development

Contribute to shaping local policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with national guidance and best practice standards.

Supervision & Professional Support

Deliver high-quality, reflective supervision.

Support induction and learning pathways for new joiners and ASYEs.

Permanency Planning & Review

Enhance care planning pathways and contribute to achieving stability and permanence for Looked After Children.

Multi-Agency Collaboration

Build and maintain effective partnerships with education, health, youth justice, and safeguarding teams.

Essential Requirements

Qualifications

Degree in Social Work or equivalent (DipSW, CQSW, or similar)

Registered with Social Work England or equivalent UK regulatory body

Experience

Substantial post-qualification experience within statutory children's services

Strong background in working with Looked After Children, permanence, and safeguarding

Demonstrated success in leading training, supervision, or practice development initiatives

Skills & Knowledge

In-depth understanding of relevant legislation (Children Act 1989, Care Planning Regulations, IRO Handbook)

Skilled in systemic approaches, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based models

Proficient in analysing service data, delivering feedback, and embedding quality assurance processes
