About social housing jobs

Social housing jobs are, typically, available through housing associations or local council authorities. The social housing jobs on SocialCare.co.uk are advertised both by housing associations, local authorities or recruitment agencies who specialise in social housing jobs.

The scope of social housing jobs has widened dramatically since the 1980s. At that time social housing was very much about rent collection and managing anti social behaviour within socially housed neighbourhoods.

Modern social housing jobs reflect the expansion in housing demand. The strategy to provide affordable housing schemes through regeneration programmes and development is constantly seeking to satisfy the shortfall between housing and the huge demand for it. Social housing schemes are, typically, available to those on below-average joint household incomes of £11K or less (per year).

The combination of relying on not-for-profit development to build new affordable housing as part of a social housing strategy, together with the loss of previously available housing being privately sold through the Right-to-Buy scheme means that the challenges facing the system need to be met by a growing number of social housing workers.

Social housing is about the provision of secure, affordable accommodation for people on low incomes, and these groups are often made up of single parent families, the elderly, the unemployed and those on housing benefits jobs in social housing are varied, enjoyable and, of course, challenging.

There’s no specific qualification that you require for all social housing jobs although you can embark on courses and take industry-specific qualifications to further your career once in. (Although we ought to make it clear that for some social housing jobs being part or fully CIH qualified is necessary - Chartered Institute of Housing. While many candidates are graduates (of various specialisms) it is not a job that expects all candidates to be of degree level.

And the jobs aren’t just about housing officers. The scope of social housing jobs, as explained above, is wide due to the changes the industry has seen over the past 30 years. Positions can include urban planners, anti-social behaviour officers and managers, tenant / rent officers, environmental officers and regeneration officials.

Social housing jobs, on a day-to-day basis, aren’t about one thing. Housing associations jobs, such as housing officer jobs, can be about dealing with disputes and maintaining rent payment, service repairs or misuse of properties. An environmental community worker might visit schools, or community centres to advocate green issues and positive social behaviour. Regeneration officers will plan green housing, and talk with communities about housing improvements.

Naturally, as you’d expect, an understanding of the welfare benefits system is useful. And cross-over skills from other areas of social services positions (such as residential care or care manager jobs) can be drawn on. Browse and apply for social housing jobs today!
