Housing Officers are responsible for the management and maintenance of a number of mixed tenure houses and are typically employed by housing associations that manage social housing schemes in the public sector but can also be privately run housing schemes.
The job of a Housing Officer covers a whole range of responsibility including dealing with rent arrears, preparing cases for court, identifying abandoned properties and looking at issues such as squatters.

The job of a Housing Officer can be very varied and a lot of the time is spent outside of the office in the field. There is a lot of direct contact with tenants, who invariably have issues that need dealing with in a timely and efficient manner. In order to obtain a Housing Officer Job it would be advisable to be CIH part qualified or fully qualified, by the Chartered Institute of Housing, which exists to maximise the contribution of those in Housing Officer jobs to the wellbeing of communities. This qualification not only tests experience but the skills needed to do the job competently. Sometimes it is possible to obtain a Housing Officer job without this qualification but typically this training would be supplied whilst working in the job and would be something to aim for.
Skills or knowledge required or desirable for the job of Housing Officer include, basic understanding of maintenance and repair issues, an understanding of the landlord/tenant obligations and legislation, experience of dealing with the general public and therefore a good customer service background would be preferential.
