About home manager jobs
Care home manager jobs on this site will typically be for either nursing homes, or residential care homes. We go in to the details about the differences between types of care home jobs elsewhere on this site (see our care homes jobs pages). But these differences do affect the kind of skills, experience and qualifications that a home manager or deputy home manager will be expected to have.
Nursing home manager jobs often look for nursing qualifications and experience (either RMN, RNLD or RGN qualifications - sometimes even RSCN, children’s nurse backgrounds too), as well as some management experience.
To that end, a care manager applying for home manager jobs may be expected to have some knowledge or a degree of experience in the specialist service provision of the home. For instance, a residential home manager job may not need you to have a nursing qualification, but it may want to see applications only from candidates with, for example, proven knowledge of working with clients in alcohol rehabilitation or ARBI.
Naturally, as you’d expect, any home manager job comes with the expectation that you’re also able to take on the responsibility of the position, including vocational standards and ensuring your organisation meets regulated industry procedures and standards. Jobs for home managers (nursing home manager jobs, deputy home manager jobs and residential home manager jobs) require either an NVQ4 qualification or RMA (see below about these qualifications and changes introduced in the past two year). Additionally, you will need to be familiar with (and registered to) the expectations of CQC (Care Quality Commission - again, see below).
NVQ4 Qualification for Care Manager Jobs
NVQs in Health and Social Care (Levels 2-4) are qualifications developed by Skills for Care and Skills for Health. NVQ Level 4 is “a requirement for managers who are registered as the responsible individual for their service.”
Read our notes about NVQs levels 2 and 3 (with reference to the QCF) in our pages about care assistant jobs.
RMA Qualification - replaced by Leadership and Management for Care Services Award - Leadership and Management Award
The NVQ National Registered Managers Award has been replaced by a new award, introduced in 2008. Although the RMA remains a relevant qualification (and you’ll see it referenced in many jobs on SocialCare.co.uk) managers who do not have the RMA will be expected to register and take the new LMA (Leadership and Management Award) once it is available in their area. For further details, we recommend you browse the Care Skillsbase pages produced by the Social Care Institute for Excellence. You can also browse for home manager jobs at Carehomejobs.com.
CQC - Care Quality Commission
The CQC is the health and social care regulator for England (see www.cqc.org.uk). Central to Social Care in England because it regulates and ensures best practice for patients and clients in hospitals, residential care, home care and care homes in England.
The CQC exists to ensure everyone receives effective, safe and cost-effective treatment for users of health and social care services in England. This is why you’ll see so much mention of CQC in jobs on SocialCare.co.uk. CQC register all providers of social care and health care, and continuously monitor their performance. They have the power to fine and publish warnings, and the authority to close down a service provider.
CSCI
The Commission for Social Care Inspection was the “independent inspectorate for social care in England” between 2004-2009. Although it has since been replaced by the CQC you may well still see references to the CSCI in jobs on SocialCare.co.uk. Especially in relation to home manager jobs.
