About jobs for care home nurses
Care home nurse jobs require qualified nursing staff, with degrees (or diplomas) in nursing, and are registered with the NMC. Care home nurse jobs form a major part of the UK nursing jobs industry - every nursing home is required to have qualified nursing staff on hand at all times (see Nurses.co.uk for registered nurse jobs).
A care home provides daily health cover and / or social care. Care homes jobs vary greatly because care homes themselves deliver different care programmes built around the specialist needs of its patients. Not all care homes provide care by qualified nursing staff. Some simply need carers or support staff to cater for the needs of people who do not have health needs, but are simply unable to care for themselves independently in other respects.
There are currently over 20,000 care homes in the UK. The Care Quality Commission (www.cqc.org.uk - “Regulate, inspect and review all adult social care services in the public, private and voluntary sectors in England”) overseas this large and growing sector to ensure best practice and the law is followed in respect of the various deliveries of care provided.
Because care home jobs vary enormously in terms of the social and clinical care they offer so too do the nurse jobs available in them.
For care homes that provide clinical (or acute) care staff nurse jobs are available. These care jobs - nursing homes - provide 24 hour cover by registered nursing staff. The registered nurse jobs advertised in care homes include general nurse jobs as well as specialist nurse jobs - RMN jobs, RNLD jobs.
Registered Mental Health Nurse Jobs - RMN Jobs
Specialist nursing homes require specialist nursing skills. For instance, a care home specialising in rehabilitative brain injury therapies may offer scope for learning disabilities nurse jobs and mental health nursing jobs. While a nursing home for elderly patients may require RMNs for EMI jobs, it may also need a home manager with mental health nursing qualifications. Given the range of care homes (see our page on care homes jobs) the types of specialist nursing jobs in care homes are wide and diverse. But it’s realistic to say that most of them are for RGN jobs (registered nurse jobs and staff nurse jobs) or RMN jobs.
The greatest type of care home nursing jobs are, typically, within dementia care providing specialist support for patients with dementia symptoms (brain trauma, memory loss, communication difficulties, learning disabilities, behavioural issues etc) and forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
This is why care home nurse jobs often offer jobs for staff nurse RMNs as well as staff nurse RGNs - eg, nurses trained specifically to help and support patients with mental disorders. Mental health nursing is a major function with nursing homes.
On SocialCare.co.uk you’ll be able to browse 100s of mental nurse jobs within this care home nurse jobs section. Mental health nursing jobs in care homes are on offer throughout the UK, and in a variety of settings (NHS, private or independent sector) and as a range of job types (part time or full time, temporary or contract). Elderly care and dementia care will almost always call upon the skills of a skilled mental health nurse (RMN jobs) and are posted to SocialCare.co.uk on a daily basis.
Mental health nurse jobs in care homes are to be found in abundance on nursing job web sites (including this one). Any provider of mental health services (whether that is specialising in, for instance, elderly care, dementia, psychoses, any of the autistic spectrum disorders, or alzheimers - among many others) will have nurse jobs available - RMN nurse jobs make up a very large portion of the care home jobs available. Registered mental health nursing jobs help clients and patients through a planned recovery programme or a programme of therapeutic care. You’ll work as part of a care team and will develop specialist skills within the area of expertise you pursue.
As with all nurse jobs, you will need to be qualified (degree or diploma), be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have an NMC Pin number. You can then choose to apply for RGN jobs (RGN nurse jobs are ‘registered general nurse jobs’) or, if you took that branch during your nurse training, RMN jobs or RNLD nurse jobs.
So the area of care home nursing that you wish to follow will depend both on the skills you want to learn and the kind of care you would most like to provide: children, youth, adult, elderly care, learning disabilities, mental health, end of life or palliative care, respite care, acute clinical nursing care....
